I Got a Job!

I am finally a working girl.
I haven't talked about my job hunt much on here, mostly because it has been really depressing.
I left a very well paying full time job in New York when I moved down here, and had no idea it would be this hard to find another job.  I was just looking for a medical receptionist type job, since that's what I did before, but Florida has a crazy amount of restrictions that NY doesn't for working in a hospital.  It also doesn't help that I'm not continuing with the path I majored in, and I can't work in the field I plan on perusing (dietetics) because I'm not certified! So, with ever restriction put in place I was getting more and more desperate.

Still, I applied to jobs every single day. Literally anything I was remotely qualified for, I applied to.
After 2 months of crazy applying? Nothing. Nada. Zilch.
I was starting to feel like there was a black hole sucking down my resumes before anyone saw them.
It would honestly have been awesome to get turned down by a job, just so I knew at least someone was reading my resume.

Then last week I came across a random customer service rep posting.  The company was confidential, but I saw that the job description looked good, and they boasted a positive work environment, which is very important to me after the high intensity and stress of my last job! So I applied and moved on to the next 237453 jobs I would apply to that day.

The next evening they called asking if I could come for an interview the next day.  I was an explosion of nerves, but the very short interview seemed to go well.  They had filled the customer service rep position, but were looking to hire an insurance verifier.  My interviewer told me it was high volume and fast-paced, so they had people they like come in for a few hour "working interview" to make sure the job was something they could keep up with.  He told me he would be making calls at the beginning of the next week (this week now) after the rest of the interviews, and if all went well he'd schedule my working interview.

The next afternoon I was on the treadmill when they called and said they would love to have me back for a working interview...the next day! I said yes and then started over analyzing everything per usual.  I really had no idea what this job would be like.  What if I hated it? Could I turn it down even though I didn't have many other prospects?

Luckily, I didn't have to worry about any of that.  I went in for 2 hours and absolutely loved it! The job is very similar to some things I had to do before, and is a lot of computer work, but is interesting and the lady I shadowed says the work days fly by.  Everyone was so friendly, laid back, and the general office atmosphere was very happy.  Plus, it's Monday to Friday, 9-5, which I was really hoping for since we have so many visitors! It really could not have been better!

After my 2 hours were up I met with my interviewer and supervisor, who said they would love to have me! They are growing, so the two other hires plus myself will be starting either next week or just after Thanksgiving, so they can have time to build us our cubicles.  Which, I must say, are very large and I'm very excited to decorate it. :) I really am so grateful I found this place to work and I can't wait to start.  With the crazy unemployment rates (especially in Florida) I know I am so lucky to have a job period, let alone in a place I think I will really enjoy! I feel very blessed and so so happy!

Now? I get to make a list of all the things I have been resisting buying for the past few months! :)

  9. Congrats on the new job! It made my day to read your post because I actually left a high paying job in Houston to pack it all up and move to Charlotte, with no plan and no job. This hunt has been a process, and it's beginning to wear on me, but your post gave me hope!

  10. Hi, I am a new follower is also named Robin. Congratulations on getting the job! I've had MUCH difficulty getting a 9-5 receptionist/office job (ended up having to take a retail job for now) so I am happy for you! I wish people around here would do "working interviews" like that. Most of them just won't call you unless you have five years of phone-answering experience.
