3 Phobias That Make Me A Total Weirdo.

Yesterday was a very, very scary day.
I was faced with two of my phobias, and while no tears were shed, it did get me thinking that I have some very weird things that scare me.

First, you know those huge windmills the power companies use for wind energy (I think there's a fancy term for it but I can't for the life of me think of it right now)?  Well, I happen to find them to be very creepy.  They're big, ominous, and the way they spin is just...creepy.
Yesterday, while driving on the Thruway from NY back to PA I had to pass a blade being transported!
So. Scary.  That thing was MASSIVE and literally gave me goosebumps.  I passed it as quickly as I could and tried to not look in my rearview mirror.  Of course, I had to stop in Rochester to pee and when I came out IT HAD PASSED ME.  So I had to go by it again.  There were lots of palpitations and hyperventilation...but I made it.

My next phobia is pretty common, those pesky arachnids.  I've always been afraid of them, but as a respectable person in her mid twenties I have evolved to being able to handle killing very small ones that I am certain can not kill me or touch me in any way.  However, I was doing laundry last night in the laundry room off our basement and say the BIGGEST spider ever.  Like baby tarantula status.  It had a huge fat body and long thick legs.  OMG I'm stressing out now just knowing it's in my zip code!  Needless to say, Dom had to come down and guard it while I got the clothes out of the dryer.  he took a picture, but I'm too nice to put it here.  It's that bad.  Neither of us are brave enough to do anything with it...so we'll see who picks the short straw and has to do the laundry next!

My third and final weird phobia is airplanes.  Yes, I am afraid of flying, but I have a bigger phobia of airplanes themselves.  And yes, I have had to pass plane parts on the Thruway too and tears were definitely shed.  I have no idea what it is about them, but they terrify me.  When I lived in DC? I only went to the Space side of the Air and Space Museum.  Walking under an airplane strung from the ceiling? No, thank you.  Way back when on a high school trip to Denmark I unknowingly walked into an airplane museum and had a nervous break down. Wierdooo.  Driving by airports gives me the heebie jeebies and when you have to board a plane from the tarmac?  Awful.  My heart literally starts pounding and I try to keep my eyes down so I don't have to look at the plane I'm getting on.  Once I've boarded I relax and deal with my mild nerves over flying.
Not kidding you, google searching airplanes for this image made my heart rate increase.  I don't even like looking at them!

Please tell me I am not the only crazy one here!  Do any of you have weird phobias?

  1. The huge airplane and windmill fear isn't as weird as you think! I'm just terrified of big things in general, but more so BIG things in the water. I can't even look at pictures of sharks, cruise ships, or icebergs without my heart racing. I guess I just feel totally out of control in bodies of water or something? Either way, you're not alone, friend :)
(With Shark Week last week, I was just starting a post on that, too!)

  3. Windmills. I hate them, I hate them, I HATE THEM. They are all over by my family's house in Illinois, and every time we pass by I have this feeling of dread and paranoia. It's just not cool.

  5. Wow!! I don't think I've ever seen one of those turbine propeller things being transported!! That is more freaky than seeing them actually going around and around!

I have a fear of flying. And planes. I've flown once and will probably never fly again, which I know limits my travel a great deal. Buuuut yeah... scary stuff!!

  6. I've only flown 3 times and it freaks me out pretttty badly every time. How in the world did you fly halfway around the world lady?! I have a mini panic attack when we start boarding, when we take off, and then when we're landing- ha!

Also- I hate driving in the rain. Like, legit freak out. Yes, I'm 90.

  9. Yeah, those wind energy things are a little creepy. I am afraid of flying, and casseroles/thick stews/gumbos make me uncomfortable.

  10. I have a really bad spider phobia, the boyfriend likes to let the small ones live in the corners and eat any bugs that may come around. We don't share the same appreciation for spiders. However, I have a funny story - My 7 yr old who has the same spider phobia as I do came over to me one day screaming her head off "MOMMY MOMMY OMG MOMMY THERE IS A FLYING SPIDER AND IT'S FLYING NEAR THE WINDOW. MOMMY HELP" My first initial reaction was OMG they fly holy crap they fly breathe Kelly breathe.. Then I was like wait they fly, omg we have a new spider species and it's my house omg.. I got the guts to walk in the room and found out it was a mosquito.. Talk about semi heart attack. Good luck doing laundry because I wouldn't go near the laundry any longer I'd bomb the house with bug killer first!!

  13. I'm TERRIFIED of octopusses (octopi?). All ocean creatures are pretty horrible, actually. You won't find me going for long swims in the ocean, especially if there are lots of kelp beds or sea grass.

  14. That windmill thing is HUGE!

Trap the spider under a cup and sooner or later he'll be a goner. Just use a cup you never want to put your lips on again and leave it turned upside down on the floor forever. :)

  16. I get crazy panic attacks when I am up too high like tears and can't breathe!

I get weirded out when I have to fly but I think it's due to the fact of being closed in a space...and spiders lets not even go there!

  17. spiders. i can't. there was actually one in my bedroom on sunday night and it was so close to my bed and my closet. and when i went to get something to kill it, it had moved closer to my closet. i sprayed it and it started running and i cried hysterically on the floor as i crushed it with a tissue. i hate them with every ounce of my entire being. they own me.

  19. oooh those windmill things are scary. I hate being passed by big trucks. I hate it when there is a bus on the one side and a truck on the other.
I am pretty ok with spiders - got used to them while living in the bush (this is Africa after all) but I don't like the big scary ones and will never voluntarily touch one

  20. Bees. Not weird but I am literally terrified. If one starts flying around, I must immediately go inside. If it even flies near my head, I run around like a crazy person. I am not even allergic. I am also not a fan of spiders and sounds like that spider would probably make me go to the laundromat haha

  21. Holes! Not single holes, but a cluster of holes. I'm getting goosebumps trying to describe it.
